The Eco-Friendly Baby

Parenting means getting used to having constant bags under your eyes, wearing spit-up as a new accessory, changing diapers like a contortionist and interpreting screams as a new language. Despite these less-than-glamorous aspects of parenting, we wouldn’t change it for the world. In fact, we strive to make sure our babies are getting the best care they need from doctors’ visits and the best babysitters to the softest clothes and highest-quality food.

Thanks to new studies, we are coming to learn that making sure our kids eat the best foods is incredibly important to their health now and for the future. Because their immune systems are still developing, infants and children are especially vulnerable to chemicals. And according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children have unique susceptibilities to the toxicity in pesticides, which can cause chronic health implications. To give you an idea what this entails, nearly 1,400 pesticides legally used for agricultural and nonagricultural purposes have been linked to various cancers.

By going organic, your children will avoid these pesticides, and they will also avoid exposure to synthetic hormones that can disrupt the endocrine system, as well as antibiotics that can lead to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In addition, organic dairies and meats contain a higher concentration of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, about 50 percent more than non-organics. Organic crops such as carrots and broccoli also have a high range of antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.

One important component found in better foods is carrageenan, the soluble fiber that comes from red seaweed. In fact, carrageenan is the only stabilizer approved for use in baby food in the U.S. Thanks to its ability to add uniformity to beverages, it is used in infant formula to ensure that all nutrients get swallowed by your baby and are not left at the bottom of the bottle. Its consistent mixture allows the effects of baby formula to be maximized, helping kids around the world get access to healthy diets starting at an early age.

Unlike synthetics such as gellan gum, carrageenan has been found to have no impact on the human body when consumed in food. So that means you can give your kids their favorite organic chocolate milk or ice cream as a treat that you know is high quality and nutritionally sound, because they deserve the very best.
